Metal finishers exiting the industry may have difficulty selling their sites due to perceived or real environmental contamination. If contamination exists, owners also face large clean up costs.

EPA Headquarters and Regional offices and state and local organizations are developing handbooks ("Cookbooks") for metal finishers to describe:

  • How to transition sites in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • How to avoid bankruptcy when selling or closing businesses.
  • Government resources available to metal finishers leaving the industry.

Environmentally Responsible Site Transition Case Studies and Recommendations
  • Prepared by the CSI Metal Finishing ERST Workgroup. Analyzes 3 metal finishers that exited the industry and proposes EPA and state actions to assist these businesses.
